Signs

Welcome to this website.

First, before you go into the detail on these pages, this is a summary to help you – a parent with a child for whom something is physically not quite right. Or perhaps your child has been given a diagnosis of a Specific Learning Difficulties, such as Dyslexia, Developmental Coordination Disorder or Attention Deficit Disorder, and you would like to find out more about how this affects your child and what can be done to help.

There is a lot of information on this site about neuro-developmental delay (NDD)/ neuro-motor immaturity (NMI) and about immature reflexes of movement – this detail may or may not be of interest to you.

The important fact is that, in some children, for some unknown reason, the nervous system does not fully mature and so the complete development of the nervous system is absent, diminished or delayed. This has knock-on effects proportional to the type and degree of immaturity.

All children display signs of nervous system immaturity as they grow but usually by the age of seven or eight, these signs have gone. Some children may have very mild symptoms, which continue beyond eight years of age, but they learn to cope with their bodies as they are and all is well.

However, others may not be so fortunate. These are children in whom something is not quite right or in whom there is clearly an issue. Classic signs of nervous system immaturity are:

  • clumsiness
  • poor balance
  • poor fine motor skills
  • poor hand-eye coordination/visual motor integration
  • poor motor sequencing
  • lack of a dominant side of the body/cross laterality or poorly defined laterality
  • poor attention, concentration and memory
  • behavioural issues e.g. frustration, hyperactivity, over-reaction

Even without a diagnosis of a learning disorder, a child may have specific trouble with reading, writing, spelling and Maths.

On a bad day, any child (or adult) can display the above signs of neuro-developmental delay and so it is important to distinguish between a short episode of these signs, perhaps caused by illness, and a more persistent problem, which needs addressing.

If the neuro-developmental delay in your child is caused by immature reflexes, then I can be of help.

The next step is to apply for the free Screening Questionnaire. The following page describes what this entails. Please e-mail me at info@neurorestart.co.uk to request the questionnaire.
